Not really looking for any fanboy rants, just want an honest answer with biases held in check.

I'm probably buying a new console this weekend. I'm kind of leaning towards Xbox, because I already have a few games (Mass Effect and a couple of others), and they also recently added the ability to watch streaming movies with Xbox Live via Netflix (I have a Netflix subscription). This Friday, they are dropping the price of the Elite package 100 bucks (and they are the latest chipsets, which apparently are less likely to RROD on you).

However, I get the impression that the PS3 is a more stable piece of hardware, and it has exclusives I'm interested in (MGS4). Also, recent price drop. I'm not really that interested in the bluray player since I don't have an HDTV, but it's certainly a plus.

So I'm interested in thoughts from anyone who has one or both systems. Any games to recommend? Any other features I'm overlooking?

EDIT: added a poll

Don't get me wrong, PS3 has many great games out or coming out soon, and I really do think it is the superior hardware.

But you and I... we're a lot alike, and those two games absolutely demand our affections.

I'll take your word for it. I like just about every game you seem to like, aside from fighters, which are not really my cup of tea.

Typically, I'd say 360. They are less stable, and will most likely brick. But the game selection is awesome. PS3 has some good exclusives, but most of it's games are cross platform with the 360.

Though you do have to pay for internet.

After playing most of the AAA titles on both systems... go with a PS3. I never have to worry about my PS3 getting a RROD, paying for online gaming (which the Wii gets for free also), or hoping that I have enough room to install a game to keep it from getting choppy. I haven't touched my 360 for about 2 months now since I got my PS3. If I didn't have Rock Band 2 with the instruments, I would've sold mine already. :/ I will try to layout the facts, but when it comes down to features and stuff, look at what kind of games you want to be playing. Even though they share 90% the same library, I can't shake the fact that PS3 is, and will be the way to go.

360 Pros:
Lost Odyssey and Marvel Ultimate Alliance (with the DLC :p) rocks ^__^
Has some great XBL games (Castle Crashers, Shadow Complex)
Has a very good controller (comfortable layout)
Decent media options (Netflix, IGN tip videos)
Avatars and Achievements :)

360 Cons:
Overheating, I always have to have a fan by mine. On my second 360 now, both of which RROD'd not even a week after I got them
Small HDD, cost over 100 bucks for a bigger one (not sure how much the elite has though), could only install 1 game at a time :/
Have to install games just to keep the DVD drive from making a grinding noise and ruining the disc (3 new games already have small circular scratches T_T)
D-pad on the controller sucks. One minute you're pulling off hadoukens, the next your guy is leaping... made me take back Street Fighter 4. :/
BIAS:Exclusives games just aren't that great (Gears 2 is fun, but the excitement wears off after you beat the game, and Halo 3 felt too generic)
Confusing point system for buying games

PS3 Pros:
Tray-less DVD drive, which you will come to love :D
Free online gaming (which gives me money for PC MMOs :p)
Massive HDD and other features (Blu-Ray is a great improvement... if you have a 1080p screen to tell the difference :/)
Can plug in a USB keyboard mouse to play Unreal Tournament 3, or makes webbrowsing and messaging friends way easier.
FACT:Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the best games I have ever played... even if the story is lost on me. Everything is topnotch and well produced. :)
BIAS:Better exclusives (Uncharted plays like a movie, MGS4 IS a movie with controls, LBP is a blast, Killzone 2 is the best looking FPS I've ever seen [1080p monitor], Valkyria Chronicles has some deep characters and an even deeper combat system, and inFAMOUS is one of the best open-world/comic book games ever made). These all feel mature and are rather solid. Maybe the Resistance and Ratchet & Clank series aren't that enjoyable to me, but the ones mentioned are all strong games. PS3 is even getting 360-exclusive games with more content, like Tales of Vesperia, or Eternal Sonata. :)

PS3 Cons:
The L2/R2 buttons cause your fingers to slide off (fixed by grabbing these from Gamestop)
PSN store is kinda layed out weird
Trophies are very "meh" to me.
Got mine for 400. :(
Doesn't come in Shiney Dark Green or Blue.

See what games you want, check the video reviews, and make your decision. :p

Go Keero. -_o

Seriously, gotta agree with Keero here. The PS3 dominates the 360 in every respect when it comes to hardware. My PS3 has never, ever given me a problem. It's never frozen, never refused to play a game, even if the game was marked up... etc. Oh, and it's never died on me. (I'm on mah 4th 360)

It's also insanely quiet. So quiet it's hard to tell when it's one, except for the green light in the front.

The 360... maaaan. If you're not prepared to install the games... be prepared to have a system that sounds like a vacuum cleaner.

Also, as I told Keero... the PS3 can use any standard SATA 2.5" HDD. I upgraded my storage space from 40GB to 320GB for $70. (if you get a PS3, lemme know and I'll send ya the links)

Buuut. Again, depends on what games you want. If the PS3 has nothing that interests you, kinda useless to pick it up. I mean, I love my 360. When it's working, it's a wonderful system with plenty of games, many of them cheaper than the PStriple. It's also got a great online service, though I can rarely use it. (due to durn dial up XD) It's got more exclusives I'm interested in. (Gears, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Fable II, Mass Effect, etc.)

I originally got the PS3 for FFXIII. Not a week or two after I did it was announced for 360. That ticked me off. -_x

Most games on PS3 come 360, and vice-versa. So you really have to weigh in which exclusives you want more. (ME, LO, BD, Gears, Halo vs. God of War, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Resistance, Uncharted, and so on.)

I'm honestly not biased against either system. I like the PS3 more in every respect when it comes to performance. Honestly, if there was a god among consoles this would be it.

The 360 has got some great games. Just make sure you get the Jasper chip set (newest one, supposedly the least likely to RROD on you) and preferably get it brand new... with a full M$ 3 year warranty.

Good luck with whatever you get. They're the same price, and if it's your first time buying one of them... I think you'll be happy with either. :)

Also, sorry for that being somewhat unorganized. Just trying to share mah experiences with both consoles. XD

I don't have an xbox I think many of the xbox title are out on PC...haven't been impressed with Halo sorry

We do have a PS3 it had to be rebooted a couple times but no complaints otherwise. We use it more for blu-ray than games but play music and rhythm games on it (RockBand, Guitar Hero, DDR)

Jay likes the MotorCross games on it, haven't played much on it honestly

The heardware on it is top notch

Don't have ps3, but i love mah 360.

Gears of war, Halo 3, and splinter cell conviction arent coming out on PS3. And theres Fable II, and Fable III was just announced. The arcade games are better.(imo, Splosion man, Shadow Complex, Castle Crashers) I like the controller alot better then the PS3s. And MGS Rising will be on the 360, im hoping it will be sorta like MGS4. F.E.A.R is supposed to be a ton better on 360, and so is The Orange Box. Also I've read Prey is good. And mass effect, of course.

The PS3 has better hardware but the 360 has by far the best library of games and the best online service. (even though you have to pay for it) There aren't many PS3 games worth playing I can't get on my Xbox, and the Xbox gets countless exclusives. And even though the PS3 is more powerful, developers often make slightly worse versions on it because the hardware is hard to work on or something....

But I'm biased.

(The Wii isn't even in the running in my opinion, even if I could play Halo or Fable with waggling and whatnot I wouldn't want to.)

I have a 360 Elite, and I love it. Except for the first couple of weeks, I haven't had any problems with it running noisy or hot. I've owned my 360 for almost two years now, and I've never gotten the RRoD. If you decide to get a 360, definitely go for an Elite... especially since they're now only $300.

There are a few games that I'm interested in for the PS3 (MGS4, Killzone 2, inFamous), but personally, there's a lot more 360 exclusives that interest me. Also, the Xbox Live Arcade has tons of great titles (Braid, Shadow Complex, Geometry Wars, Ikaruga, etc.).

The online service for the 360 is excellent... you definitely get what you pay for.

I haven't had much experience with the PS3, but from what I have, I can tell you I like the 360 much better... not to mention it has a much more comfortable controller. :D

Well I think I've decided on the Xbox. I've already got some games for it, and the Netflix thing is a big plus... I don't have an HDTV so the bluray player isn't a huge draw for me at the moment.

Also, I'm going to be picking up a PS3 later this year (most likely), which also factored into my decision... if I had to make a more permanent decision, I'd probably go with the PS3.
